Freddie Aguilar - Anak/Children
This song means CHILD.The story is about the relation between parent and child. The child grow up the in wrong direction and become a drug user.
Literal Translation: When you were born into this world, your parents were so happy. Their hands became your light. Your mom and dad didn't know what to do, they watched you even when you were asleep. Every night your mom slept late just to prepare your milk. And every morning you found yourself on your father's lap who’s so proud and happy to have you. Now you're all grown up and you want to be free but they don't agree with it (cause they're scared it might do you harm and they didn't want to go), but you can't really do anything about it. So you suddenly changed.
But now that you've grown, you wanted to be independent (to be free from your parents). And they cannot do anything about that. You suddenly changed You became stubborn You rejected their advises. You didn't even stop to consider that they only thought of your happiness and well-being. In your desires to go after your luxuries you shunned them (or turned your back on them). Time passed, you strayed from your path you got ensnared by vices...
You became hard-headed. All the advice and pretty much everything - the lessons, the manners, the values, the commands and orders – they gave you, you defied. You didn't even think that everything they do is for you. All you wanted was to abide by your rules and you ignored them. Days went by and you found yourself on the wrong path (you've gone astray), you got addicted to vices (cigars, alcohol, drugs, and possibly sex). The first person you approached was your crying mom and she asked "Child, why have you become like this?" Tears went flowing down your eyes without even you noticing it. You regret everything then you suddenly realized that you were wrong, you made a mistake.
The song tells about the sacrifices of the parents for the sake of their children, all the love they give to them, the nurturing...they tried so hard to raise their child to be a better person and live a good life only to be saddened to see their child turn the other cheek and lead the life of a 'desperado', a scoundrel, a no-good bloke. There's nothing that hurts more to a parent than seeing that precious life of your beloved child gone to waste despite all your better guidance.
“Child” (English translation by ORS, 2011)
When you born into this world
Your parent’s big joy
And their hands, your light
And your mother and father
Not knowing what they would do
Watching even your sleeping
And at night your mother, sleepless
For your milk preparation
And in the morning holding you on his lap
For your father, lots of joy from you
Now you are already big
Your wish to be free
Even though they don’t allow it, they will be lost
You suddenly change
Your head becomes hard
And their advice, you violate
You don’t even only think
What they’re doing for you
Because it is your wish, your freedom you obey
You don’t give them attention
Yet the days passed
And your path you lost
You were swallowed in evil vice
And the first to approach you
Your mother in tears
And the question, “Child, why are you like that?”
And your eyes, suddenly, tear up
Which you did not notice
Regrets, and in your thoughts
You know your mistakes
Inspiration and composition
Freddie Aguilar left family and school unfinished at the age of 18. His father, who had wanted him to be a lawyer, was disappointed. Freddie travelled to far-away places carrying with him, solely, his guitar. With no one to guide and discipline him, he got into gambling.
Realizing and regretting his mistakes five years later, Freddie composed Anak, a remorse song expressing apology to his parents. He went back home and asked for forgiveness from his parents who welcomed him with open arms. After his father read the lyrics of Anak, the two became closer to each other.
The homecoming proved timely as soon after, his father would pass away.According to Felipe de Leon, Jr., an authority in Philippine Music, the song was composed in a Western style but has aspects of pasyon, a form that many Filipinos can identify with.
